Experience Narrative:

You’re invited to a casual social gathering where you don’t know many people. You worry that you’ll come across as awkward or boring if you try to start a conversation. I will approach a person who looks free to talk, I will introduce myself and explain that I don't know many people here, ask them about how they know the host, or what they do for a job, hobbies etc.

Belief to be tested:

“If I start talking to someone, they’ll think I’m strange or uninterested.”

Alternative Perspective:

“Most people appreciate someone making the effort to talk to them and are likely to respond positively.”

Safety Behaviours to drop:

Rehearsing every sentence before speaking. Avoiding eye contact. Staying near the edge of the room or using your phone to avoid interaction.
